BATTLE ENGINE GENERAL OVERVIEW A battle engagement begins when one fleet enters a territory owned by another faction which has a fleet present. The battle takes place in turns and ends when a fleet retreats from combat or is annihilated. TURNS The defending player is given initiative and makes the first move. The options available to the player during his active turn is to either attack or retreat. Attacking will have your ships engage the enemy head on, while retreating will have your ships attempt to pull out into an adjacent sector. PHASES The opening phase of a player's turn is the Decision phase. The player must decide whether he will attack or retreat. If the player chooses to retreat, then his turn will end and the opposing player's turn will begin. If the player chooses to attack instead, the Attack phase begins. The Attack phase is broken down by ship classes. The total combat power of the attacking fleet is calculated for each class of ships the defender has. If both players have any enhancements that they wish to use, then these are declared during the Attack phase and applied accordingly. Next, the Evade phase begins. This judges how many ships of each class dodges the attack, based on their MOBILITY rating and a random evasion roll. Next, the Damage Assessment phase begins. The total attacking power of attacking fleet is weighed against the total defending power of the individual class of ships for the defending fleet. All ships that have been destroyed by the attack are removed from the fleet count and the turn is over.
